I loved 3Thursdays. It was absolutely spectacular. I got to pitch my idea to an actual director, get constructive feedback, have it read by my peers in front of my peers, get constructive feedback and then finally get it read by ACTUAL ACTORS in front of a bunch of people like it was a legitimate work, a legitimate play; it was just awesome. Everything I could’ve wanted. Oh, and also tons of candy.

I think my favorite thing about 3Thursdays was the sense of community and comfort. During the three weeks, I met and got to know some students I had never known, and I met the amazing Naked Angels staff. I rarely share my work with anyone, but I felt comfortable sharing knowing that everyone else was currently or had been in the same shoes as me.

In 2010, Naked Angels company member Jean Marie McKee had an idea to bring public high school students and playwrighting together.  In collaboration with the Naked Angels staff, an innovative and dynamic creative writing program was born and named 3Thursdays.

The first 3Thursdays program took place during the spring semester of 2011 with Stuyvesant High School in the Battery Park area of Manhattan.  This educational program incorporates Naked Angels’ unique 3-Step formula, teaching high school students how to express themselves through writing, especially playwrighting, and to share and collaborate on new ideas.

Students meet with Naked Angels’ teaching artists for three Thursdays in a row.  Classes include where ideas can come from, how to format a play, and how to use sharing to improve and revise ideas. In this fast-paced, exciting environment, students pitch their story ideas to a guest theater artist, write their own short plays or other new works, and in the final week, see their work performed in a theater by professional actors.  After the readings, the actors as well as other theater professionals from the Naked Angels’ community are on hand to provide inspiring feedback in a relaxed setting.

In addition to providing instruction on writing skills and techniques, 3Thursdays encourages creative experimentation, problem-solving, and collaborative dexterity.

3Thursdays is free to participants thanks to a generous grant from the Horace W. Goldsmith Foundation.
