“I loved 3Thursdays. It was absolutely spectacular. I got to pitch my idea to an actual director, get constructive feedback, have it read by my peers in front of my peers, get constructive feedback and then finally get it read by ACTUAL ACTORS in front of a bunch of people like it was a legitimate work, a legitimate play; it was just awesome. Everything I could’ve wanted. Oh, and also tons of candy.” – Ben

“I think my favorite thing about 3Thursdays was the sense of community and comfort. During the three weeks, I met and got to know some students I had never known, and I met the amazing Naked Angels staff. I rarely share my work with anyone, but I felt comfortable sharing knowing that everyone else was currently or had been in the same shoes as me.” – Meg

3thursday program

3Thursdays is a dynamic creative writing program that teaches playwriting technique to New York City public high school students. Each session hosts 12-15 students on a first-come, first-served basis. Students meet for three consecutive Thursday afternoons to learn how to format, pitch ideas, revise and develop work, culminating in a professional public presentation of their work.

In keeping with Naked Angels’ focus on the writer, 3Thursdays workshops challenge students to expand and sharpen their creative and professional skills. On the first Thursday, students work with Naked Angels’ teaching artists on writing exercises and theater games. They then learn how to format a play and engage in collaborative discussions about each other’s writings and ideas.  On the second Thursday, a professional Guest Artist, usually a writer or a director, works directly with the students to give them expert guidance on further developing and molding their plays. On the final day, the students have the opportunity to work with professional actors prior to a public presentation of their plays, mirroring the professional experience of Naked Angels’ Tuesday@9 events.

Created in 2011 by Jean Marie McKee, the program quickly earned praise and interest, so 3Thursdays now welcomes students from all NYC public high schools. 3Thursdays not only provides formal instruction on playwriting, but also supports our belief that theater can be a tool to build self-confidence and courage when it’s needed most.

3Thursdays is made possible due to the generosity of the Horace W. Goldsmith Foundation.

This program is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the City Council.
